Alcohol/Drug-Impaired Driving

An awareness survey carried out on 300 people in licensed premises in the Bay of Plenty region revealed that 84% thought that posters and signage in licensed premises was a good way to promote responsible driving.

PROJECT PISST, a Tauranga and Western Bay of Plenty drink drive awareness campaign, began nine years ago, initiated by Jury Design and funded by the Tauranga/Western Bay of Plenty District Council.

PROJECT PISST involved installing 80 permanent poster frames in licensed premises (in toilets) that housed "attention-grabbing" images and drive-sober messages. The campaign was a multimedia mix; also including billboards, advertisements, various print material and promotional items.

The first and most important task was to capture the attention of patrons. The second was to get a "drive-sober" message across in a limited amount of time. Jury Design combined bright and unique images (not traditionally associated with drink driving) with simple messages. The result was that 72% of people interviewed said the posters captured their attention.

Note: Many of these resources can be adapted to include drug-impaired driving.
